The Secret of the Nyonya Kitchen is an immersive coming-of-age story set in the historic heart of George Town, Penang. Fourteen-year-old Eddy is sent from the modern city of Kuala Lumpur to spend his school holidays with his formidable grandmother, Ah Ma, a renowned master of traditional Nyonya cuisine. Resenting the grueling, manual labor of pounding spices with a stone mortar and pestle, Eddy longs for shortcuts—until an accidental mishap causes his grandmother’s legendary, highly prized family “recipe book” to fall behind the heavy brick stove, forcing him and his resourceful local friend Mei Ling on a secret night expedition beneath the shophouse’s historic foundations.

When Ah Ma suddenly injures her ankle on the eve of the annual Armenian Street Heritage Food Festival, the stakes escalate dramatically. With no written recipe book to rely on and thirty pots of signature Nyonya Laksa expected by the entire neighborhood, Eddy must step up to the stove. Guided only by his grandmother’s sharp memory, sensory cues, and the hard-earned physical memory of his daily training, Eddy discovers the true philosophy of agak-agak—learning that authentic heritage isn’t preserved on paper, but passed down through passion, resilience, and heart.
